The fact that you are reading this blog means you already have a lot to be thankful for. It means you woke up this morning and had a world of opportunities available to you. It means you have internet access, either at home, on your mobile phone, or even both! It means you almost certainly have a roof over your head, access to heat, hot water and hot food. That’s already more than 5 reasons that anyone reading this instantly has to be thankful for. Too often in life we focus on what we don’t have and forget about the small things that make a major difference to our quality of life.
So many people I come across on a daily basis are unhappy with their lives. To be honest, I even have days where I think, what’s the point and life sucks! So many people are striving to be rich, powerful and successful and we don’t realise how much wealth and power we already possess. If you take the time to actually look at your life and what you have you will be able to see this for yourself. Of course there are “big” things in life that we’d all like to achieve however, rather than delaying out happiness until we have those big things, we can be happy now just by acknowledging how much we already have. Family, friends, a career, somewhere to live, a car, money for food, to pay the bills and a little treat every now and then, to name but a few. Many of us have gym membership we don’t use, clothes and shoes we don’t wear and regularly enjoy take aways, eating out and holidays abroad. If you’re reading this it means you can actually read which means you’ve been educated and have free access to thousands, if not millions of books via libraries. Knowledge is power, yet how many of you read or utilize the free resources available to you? I could go on and yes it’s true, some of us have more than others but the basics are the same for us all and it’s often the case that those with the most are actually the ones that are most unhappy with their lives. This is because many people measure their success and happiness by the material things they possess and wonder why they never feel truly fulfilled. True fulfillment does not coming from material things, or anything external for that matter. True fulfillment comes from being true to yourself and honoring your purpose in life.
Time to take action: Schedule some quiet time to yourself, at least 30 mins. Take a pen and some paper and make a list of all the good you have in your life right now. Everything! Once you have completed your list, keep it by your bed and every night before you go to bed and every morning before you wake up, read it. That way no matter how your day went or how it goes, you’ll always be reminded of all the good you have in your life and how wealthy you already are.
