Put Yourself First: 5 Effective Steps to Practice Self-Love

Put Yourself First: 5 Effective Steps to Practice Self-Love

You would think that it would be the most normal thing in the world to act lovingly towards ourselves. After all, most of us have no difficulty acting lovingly towards others.

Granted, the way in which we express our love towards others will be different for all of us, however, the bottom line is that we most of us find it far easier and more natural to share our love with others.

Why is this? Why is it so difficult to put yourself first?

In this post, I will share 5 effective steps to practice self-love.

Your default response to the people in your life will determine your ability to practice self-love

Many of us are not even consciously aware that we do not act lovingly towards ourselves. In fact, it is not something that we even think about.

How often do you ask yourself how am I feeling?

I’m guessing not very often.

Yet, how often will you think of a friend or family member and say to yourself, “I must check in with so and so to see how they’re doing”?

Are you you discounting your gifts and talents?

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

OMG! Your hair looks so good.

That was the start of my Monday morning this week.

No, I hadn’t perfected my twist out; I had noticed one of my colleagues rocking her hair in it’s natural state with mini twists.

I’ve worked with her for almost six years and the entire time she’s always worn weave or hair extensions.

When I started working with her, my hair was natural but  I always wore my hair straight. Two years years ago however, I stopped straightening my hair and began wearing it in its natural curly state.

As long as I’ve worked with her, my colleague has always commented on my hair and we’re always complementing each other on our outfit choice for the day.

She would always say that she’d love to “go natural” but that her African hair was “too hard and kinky”. I would always encourage her and say that was just what she had been conditioned to think.

Anyway, back to Monday morning.

I asked my colleague what inspired her choice … Read more

In Search of a Creative Orgasm

in search of creative orgasm

“The thing is most people are afraid to step out, to take a chance beyond their established identity.” – Demi Moore

Have you ever felt sexually frustrated?

You know, when you want need that hot, steamy and passionate connection with someone you fancy the pants off, but they’re not around to satisfy your needs?

Or worst yet, when you’re in a committed relationship, but it’s gone stale and it’s been a hot minute since you really experienced ecstasy?

Well, that’s how I’m currently feeling!

No, not about my bedroom activities, but about my creative desires.

I’m creatively frustrated.

And I have been for a very long time.

The fairy tale

In my case, I’ve been in a committed relationship with Society and the spark died a long time ago.

In fact, I’m not sure there was ever really a spark.

Society was my reliable and safe “Knight in Shining Armor”.

I grew up being told that Society was the perfect catch.

I spent my childhood being groomed for my relationship with Society so when it eventually happened, I knew what I was getting.

I knew what was expected of me in the relationship and I always knew where I stood.… Read more

30 Motivational Quotes by Women on Being Authentic

motivational quotes by women on being authentic

“I can be a better me than anyone can.” – Diana Ross

Over the past few months I’ve been participating in writing courses with Lisa Lister, GG Renee and Susannah Conway.

The focus of all the courses is to become a more authentic writer.

I’ve been aware for a long time that my writing does not accurately reflect my personality. My authentic voice has been stifled for a long time and I wanted a way to access it and sound more like me.

Finally I have begun to shed many of the layers that have been hiding my authentic voice and I’ve started experimenting with my writing.

I’m now writing on my personal blog, which I created in November but had only written 2 posts for.

Writing in my authentic voice makes me feel vulnerable and it’s scary. However, it’s something I have a deep urge to do.

I’ve been thinking about all the ways we limit ourselves and suppress who we truly are.

If you’re anything like me, you just want to be yourself, but struggle daily to meet the expectations and demands of the world around you.

So to kick-start June, I wanted to share … Read more

Happiness and a Positive Outlook on Life Go Hand in Hand

happiness and a positive outlook on life

“Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln

Smiling faces and upbeat conversations.

A world full of creativity and authentic people.

Everyone leaping out of bed each day and truly celebrating a new day.

People looking forward to the day ahead because they’re being a contribution, using their skills and talents in a way they enjoy whilst making a difference.

This is how I imagine the world if everyone loved life.

Can you imagine a life where everyone was happy and fulfilled?

There are two ways to view life

I know everything in life has a yin and a yang; two sides to everything and therefore two ways of looking at every situation.

I understand this, however I cannot help but wonder how much more enjoyable life would be if there were more positive people in the world. If more people were optimistic and focused on the brighter side of life.

If people were driven by their dreams rather than their fears.

There is no doubt that in life shit will always happen. We will lose people we love, we will fail at things we attempt, and sometimes we’ll just feel tired, … Read more

4 Tried and Tested Strategies for Managing Procrastination

4 strategies for managing procrastination

“Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.” ~ Victor Kiam

Aubergines are supposed good for me. I’m not really a fan, but due to this detox diet I’m on, I’m very limited as to what I can eat.

I hop online real quick to get a couple of recipe ideas for dinner tonight.

An hour later, somehow I’m reading up on the benefits of oil pulling… and I still haven’t found any decent aubergine recipes.

I get up from the laptop to make a drink with the intention of returning to spend an hour or so writing. I return from the kitchen 30 minutes later after washing the dishes.

Procrastination and distraction. I’m not sure one exists without the other.

Do I get distracted because I’m procrastinating or is procrastination a form of distraction?

I’m not entirely sure.

All I know is that they show up together and stop me from making progress in so many areas of my life. And they frustrate the hell out of me!

I think my challenge is that I have so much that I want to do, I try and do everything and my priorities go out of the window.

I’m also an ideas person. I … Read more
